Wyomissing is one of my favorite towns to work in, and one of the trickier ones for window screens. You have grand older homes on the tree-lined streets with windows that came in no standard size, and you have newer builds with sliding patio doors and big screened openings. Same town, two different screen problems. Here is what I see in Wyomissing homes and how I handle each. The older homes: odd sizes and arched tops
The stone and brick homes on the older Wyomissing streets are beautiful, and their windows were built one at a time. Tall double-hungs, casements that crank out, an arched top over the front door, the odd round window in a gable. None of those take a screen off a shelf. When mesh tears on a window like that, a big-box store cannot help, and a handyman guesses at the size. I measure the opening at your house and build a custom window screen to fit it. The newer homes: sliding doors and big openings
The newer developments bring a different list. Sliding patio window screen doors that jump the track or drag. Tall picture windows with large screens that bow in the heat. Screened porches off the back. The parts wear the same way in a ten-year-old house as in an old one, and I carry rollers and mesh for both. All those trees mean pollen and debris
The tree cover is part of what makes Wyomissing, and it is hard on screens. Pollen coats the mesh in spring. Seeds and small branches poke holes. Squirrels do their part. If your screens face a big oak or sit near the creek, they take more abuse than a screen on a bare lot. Fresh mesh with the right tension sheds that load better and rinses clean with a hose.
Mesh choices that fit Wyomissing homes
Standard fiberglass is right for most windows here. Two upgrades come up a lot:
- Solar mesh on the west and south-facing rooms of the bigger homes. It cuts heat and glare and takes the sun without going brittle as fast.
- Pet-resistant mesh for the households with a dog that loves the patio door. It holds up where standard mesh gives out.

When to book
Late winter into spring is the calm stretch, before the bugs push everyone to call at once. If you know a few screens need work, that window gets you on the calendar in the same week without the wait. Come June, the phone runs hot.
